Bush's Re-Election Around the World
Compiled by
David Pakman
George W. Bush was inaugurated for his second term as president of the
United States on January 20th, 2005. A study conducted by
PIPA (Program on
International Policy Attitudes) for the BBC World Service just two days
before the inauguration looked at the opinion of other countries towards
various aspects of the US based on this re-election. Here are the
results:
Is George Bush's re-election positive or negative for peace and
prosperity in the United States?

Overall, almost all countries surveyed feel that Bush's re-election is
negative for peace and prosperity in the United States. The exceptions
would be the Philippines and India, where more than half of the citizens
feel that Bush being re-elected will be positive.
Of the countries included in the study, Turkey, Argentina, and Brazil
feel the most negatively about peace and prosperity for the world under
Bush's second term. Poland is the only country, other than the
Philippines and India, with more than 40% of the citizens believing the
second term will be positive.
Foreign Citizens' view of US influence in the world:

When asked if the influence of the United States in the world is
positive or negative, there was slightly more positive feeling than in
the first question regarding peace and prosperity, although clearly
international opinion of the US' influence is negative. Joining the
Philippines and India as countries with more than 50% favorability are
Poland, South Africa, and South Korea. Citizens from Argentina, Germany,
and Russia are the most against the US' influence in the world.
How does Bush's re-election make you feel about the American people?

Regarding the change in their sentiments towards Americans based on
Bush's re-election, only India and the Philippines have improved
their opinion of Americans. The countries who's citizens' view of
Americans has deteriorated the most are Turkey, France, and Brazil.
How does Bush's re-election make you feel about whether your country
should contribute troops to the operation in Iraq?

When asked whether they feel their country should contribute troops to
the Iraq situation based on Bush's re-election, no countries are in
favor. The countries most in favor are Australia, South Korea,
and the Philippines, while on the other hand, the countries most opposed
are Russia, Turkey, Argentina, and France.
